With abundant sunshine, vast open landscapes, and a provincial government committed to sustainable growth, the region has become a magnet for clean energy investment—delivering thousands of jobs, reducing carbon emissions, and empowering communities. As of 2025, the province is home to 46 renewable energy projects, strategically spread across the region: • 33 solar photovoltaic plants generating a total of 1,420 MW • 6 concentrated solar power (CSP) plants generating 500 MW • 12 wind energy projects contributing 1,458 MW In 2022 alone, these renewable energy plants generated a combined 8,672 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of electricity, feeding into the national grid and helping to relieve pressure on South Africa’s energy system. These figures continue to rise as more projects reach completion and grid integration. Jobs, Skills & Economic Opportunity The renewable energy surge has had a direct impact on local employment and economic growth. Construction phases of these projects have created thousands of jobs, with many transitioning into long-term operations and maintenance roles. The Northern Cape Department of Economic Development and Tourism, in collaboration with project developers, has also prioritised skills development, youth training, and local procurement, ensuring that host communities benefit not just from short-term employment, but also from lasting opportunity. Global Green Energy Hub Premier Zamani Saul has repeatedly reaffirmed the province’s ambition to become Africa’s green energy capital. Alongside solar and wind, the Northern Cape is poised to play a central role in South Africa’s Green Hydrogen Strategy, with pilot projects already underway. "The future is green, and the Northern Cape is ready," said MEC Abraham Vosloo, praising the renewable energy sector for injecting billions into the provincial economy while building resilience and sustainability. Environmental Stewardship Beyond economic benefits, the renewable energy programme is helping South Africa move toward its Just Energy Transition goals. By replacing coal-based power with clean alternatives, the Northern Cape is directly contributing to reduced greenhouse gas emissions, water conservation, and environmental protection—while positioning itself as a model for other provinces.
