Biofuel: An Overview

Show Voice Options In December 2006, the Cabinet approved a draft Biofuels Industrial Strategy, which was then put forward for public consultation. This consultation process included workshops and meetings held at both national and provincial levels, engaging a wide range of stakeholders, including organized industry representatives, farmers, communities, non-governmental organizations, and provincial government departments. The feedback gathered from these consultations was carefully reviewed and integrated into the draft strategy. By December 2007, the Cabinet formally approved the National Biofuels Industrial Strategy, marking a significant milestone in South Africa’s efforts to promote biofuels as a viable and sustainable energy source. Along with the approved strategy, the Licensing Criteria for biofuel manufacturing facilities were published on the Department of Energy's website, setting out the necessary requirements for obtaining a license to operate in the biofuels sector. The Biofuels Industrial Strategy targets a 2% biofuels penetration in the country's fuel pool by 2013. This modest 2% addition is expected to have several positive impacts, including a slight boost to national energy security, the creation of approximately 25,000 jobs in rural farming communities, and a potential saving of R1.7 billion in balance of payments. The introduction of biofuels also aligns with the broader goals of reducing dependence on imported petroleum products, promoting sustainable agricultural practices, and supporting rural economic development. The strategy has contributed to shaping South Africa's energy transition, ensuring that biofuels play a role in the nation's energy mix while fostering growth in the agricultural and manufacturing sectors.
