New Water Security Measures Rolled Out in Drought-Affected Areas

In George, the Department of Water and Sanitation recently completed a R1.4 billion infrastructure programme that includes new reservoirs, upgraded pipelines, and pump stations to strengthen long-term supply and reduce the risk of critical shortages, while municipalities in the Central Karoo have intensified restrictions and groundwater recovery plans to protect vulnerable communities. Government says these measures are designed not only to secure drinking water access but also to protect agriculture, local businesses, and economic stability in regions heavily affected by prolonged dry conditions. Officials have urged residents to reduce household consumption, fix leaks, and support conservation efforts as South Africa works to strengthen resilience against worsening climate-related water challenges and ensure sustainable access to one of the country's most critical resources.
