Eastern Cape Back-to-School Campaign Kicks Off with Renewed Energy and Community Support

Show Voice Options The Eastern Cape Executive Council (EXCO), alongside Ministers and Deputy Ministers, embarked on a dynamic week-long Back-to-School Outreach Programme aimed at strengthening education, empowering learners, and fostering community involvement across the province. This annual initiative underscores the importance of education as a societal responsibility, ensuring that every learner is given the tools and opportunities to thrive. Through collaborative efforts, EXCO members and national leaders have been actively engaging with learners, teachers, and parents to promote inclusive, quality education. The campaign highlights practical support, with government departments and agencies contributing vital resources. At Stanford Primary School in Bizana, South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) provided full uniforms for learners, while the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development (DALRRD) distributed school bags and agricultural implements were handed over under the leadership of MEC Nonceba Kontsiwe. Furthermore, the Department of Social Development provided essential supplies. In Mdantsane, Mizamo High School, one of the top-performing school with an impressive 80% matric pass rate for 2024, received sports equipment, sanitary packs, and school bags. Here, Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC Sibulele Ngongo, also engaged with school leaders to identify areas where government support could further improve educational outcomes. Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi visited Imiqhayi Senior Secondary School in Zwelitsha, addressing key challenges faced by young people, such as teenage pregnancy, gangsterism, and drug abuse. The Minister expressed concern over rising teenage pregnancies and announced stricter measures to investigate and prosecute cases involving underage girls and adult men. Minister Kubayi also urged learners to focus on their education, emphasizing that education is the key to escaping poverty. Drawing from her personal journey as the daughter of a domestic worker who rose to become a government minister, she inspired learners to dream big and work hard. The campaign includes direct interaction with communities to gather feedback on improving the education system. Services on wheels, mentorship programs, and donations are part of the comprehensive effort to support schools and communities. Transport and Community Safety MEC Xolile Nqatha visited several schools in Nelson Mandela Bay Metro, including Paterson High School, Masiphathisane High School and Khanyisa Special School, continuing the campaign’s momentum in engaging schools across the province. The Eastern Cape government remains committed to empowering young people, addressing challenges, and fostering a supportive environment for education. This outreach programme serves as a reminder that investing in education is an investment in the future, ensuring learners are equipped to become responsible, productive, and competitive citizens.
