Female Free State artists’ works included in exhibition at Constitution Hill

Show Voice Options This exhibition brings together two dynamic collectives whose work explores the intersection of identity, memory, and experience within the South African context. Kollectiva is based in the Free State, and exhibition intern, Meghan Fabre, joins Yolanda Maartens in the OFM Art Beat to share her excitement about this exhibition. Names Like Rivers, Faces Like Fire promises to offer a vital dialogue on South African issues, resilience, and the shaping of new cultural narratives. Through a range of media, the artists explore personal and political realities, creating work that speaks to diverse forms of community. The exhibition takes its point of departure from point 8 of KOLLECTIVA art collective’s manifesto, which states the following: “As individuals, we embrace the fluidity and multiplicity of our identities – holding space for our many personal, cultural, and gender experiences.” The concept of identity and its inherently diverse and contradictory nature are quite pivotal in the conception of this exhibition. All elements in the show, while being created by two collectives – BLVK BLOCK and KOLLECTIVA – focus on the ability to showcase the convergence of elements that flow through the individual artists and how they are juxtaposed with the component that burns through them.
