WHO Highlights Physical Activitys Role in Preventing Chronic Disease

Show Voice Options The World Health Organization has reaffirmed that regular physical activity is one of the most effective strategies for preventing and managing chronic diseases worldwide, helping to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes and several cancers while also improving mental health, quality of life and overall wellbeing. Despite this, physical inactivity remains a major global health challenge, with around one in three adults not meeting recommended activity levels, contributing significantly to chronic illness and premature death. WHO guidelines advise adults to aim for 150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity each week, alongside muscle strengthening exercises, noting that even small amounts of movement provide meaningful health benefits. The organization stresses that reversing inactivity trends requires coordinated action across health systems, education, transport and urban planning to create environments that make physical activity safer and more accessible for everyone.
