Researchers analysed device-measured movement data from more than 135 000 adults across Norway, Sweden, the United States and the United Kingdom and found that adding just five extra minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity each day was associated with around a 10 percent reduction in all-cause mortality among most adults, especially those who are least active at baseline.The research also looked at how reducing sedentary time affects outcomes and found that cutting 30 minutes of sitting each day was associated with lower death rates across populations, even if the activity was light rather than vigorous. Scientists emphasise that these small, realistic changes - such as taking a short walk, climbing stairs, or simply moving more throughout the day - are achievable for most people and could prevent millions of premature deaths if adopted broadly.The findings reinforce public health messaging that every movement counts, and that physical activity does not need to be intense or time-consuming to be beneficial.
