Daily Opioid Use Fell After Recreational Cannabis Legalisation

Show Voice Options New research from the United States indicates that daily opioid use declined among people who inject drugs after recreational cannabis was legalised, suggesting that greater access to legal cannabis may influence substance use patterns and reduce reliance on stronger, riskier pain medications. The study analysed health data across multiple states before and after cannabis legalisation, finding that individuals in regions with legal recreational marijuana reported lower frequency of opioid use and fewer doses per day compared with similar populations in non-legal states, raising important questions about how cannabis policy changes may impact public health, addiction trends and harm-reduction strategies.
